In a recent opinion piece published by the Times of Malta, Dr Alec Sladden highlights how realistic fake audio and video (“deepfakes”) pose three major risks to Malta’s justice system:
- Authentication- courts lack specialized standards to reliably distinguish real from fake;
- The “Liar’s Dividend”- genuine evidence might be dismissed as fake, enabling wrongdoers to evade accountability; and
- Erosion of trust- public confidence in verdicts and judicial institutions may collapse if courts can’t distinguish truth from fabrication.
The article also outlines practical solutions to help safeguard Malta’s legal system from these emerging threats.
